Abstract: [Objective] To evaluate the impact of total removal of lateral discoid meniscus on lateral patellar displacement
.[Methods] From
January 2004 to March 2009, a total of 96 patients with lateral discoid
meniscus was enrolled into this study, including 44 men and 52 women
with a mean age of (25.03¡À9.45) years ranging from 14 to 38 years,
involving 50 left knees and 46 right knees. Total meniscectomy was
performed in 96 knees (96 patients) for treatment of discoid lateral
meniscus. The loaded X-rays and computerized topographies were taken
from every patient to measure the width of the lateral tibiofemoral
space, tibiofemoral angle, lateral displacement of the patella and
distance between the tibial tuberosity and the trochlear groove (TTTG
). [Results] All patients were followed up for a mean of (12.56¡À2.31) years. The
width of the lateral tibiofemoral space significantly decreased from
(5.95 ¡À 1.50) mm preoperatively to (3.95¡À0.85) mm at the latest follow
up, with a statistical significance (P<0.05) . In addition, the
lateral displacement of the patella measured on CT images significantly
increased from £¨0.15¡À0.10£© mm before operation to (3.25¡À0.60) mm at the
latest follow- up, which proved statistically significant (P<0.05) .
Furthermore, the tibiofemoral angle, significantly decreased from
(176.56¡À2.54)¡ã preoperatively to (167.52¡À2.72)¡ã at the latest follow up,
with a statistical significance (P<0.05) .Moreover, the TT-TG value
significantly increased from (11.60¡À2.85) mm preoperatively to (20.35
¡À2.25) mm at the latest follow up, which was statistically significant
(P<0.05) .
[Conclusion] Total removal of complete
lateral discoid meniscus might induce lateral displacement of the
patella, and lead to patellofemoral arthritis at the later stage.
